Softball beats Northwestern 7-3

The Wildcats softball team beat Northwestern 7-3 Monday afternoon in a non-conference matchup.

St. Kate's scored early, putting two runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning. After Jessica Kniefel and Andrea Boser singled to get on base, Lisa Jacobs recorded an RBI on a sacrifice hit. #Jessi McGehee# then doubled to bring in Boser with the Wildcats second run.

In the second inning, the Wildcats scored again when Kniefel tripled to bring Jenna Clark across home plate. 

After Northwestern tied the game with three runs in the top of the third, St. Kate's came back to take a 4-3 lead in their half of the inning. After a Kaitlyn Frank doubled, Ann Schmitz singled to bring in the go ahead run for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats added some insurance runs in the fifth inning. McGehee started the offensive surge by hitting a solo home run to deep right centerfield. Kayla Bergerson and Kniefel each had RBI singles to bring home the Wildcats last two runs and seal the 7-3 win.

Tianna Allen (8-10) recorded the win after pitching four innings and giving up just three runs on four hits.  Bergerson came on in relief to finish the game. She allowed only two hits in three innings while recording four strikeouts. 

The win improves St. Kate's to 12-21 overall on the season. 

Tomorrow the Wildcats try to continue their winning ways when they travel to Concordia for the season finale double-header.
